Hello everyone!
My name is Megumi. My performer name is Hoshigumo, 'star cloud'. It's an homage to Hanagumo, and to the town I grew up in, where you could see the milky way on any clear night.
I've posted a few times on another geiko-oriented forum as ShiroiMegumi, but as posts seemed to get eaten up rather quickly by those started by more well-established members, I've been out of the internet forum game for a while. This is me wandering back. Probably for the best it's not back to the other board--I'd most likely end up banned, as I'm trying to establish myself as a maiko-esque entertainer and cultural demonstrator. Not really my first thought, but there are so few kimono owners in my area (much less ones willing or able to do a fair maiko kitsuke) that several people have asked for appearance price lists and availability. That isn't to sound self-important, on the contrary, I'm terrified, as though I've already failed.
I guess...reading some of the posts here has made me feel a little less embarrassed about being a silly woman who likes to put on kimono and less frightened about trying to be a silly woman who puts on kimono to make money. But now I'm embarrassed at how long this post is, so I'll be quiet...

Thank you for the welcome, everyone. I really look forward to chatting more with you.
Tachibana-san,
It happens a lot. No worries!
[storytime] I married a Bauer. He isn't actively involved in cultural things, but he's kind enough to take an interest in what makes his wife happy. It happens that I would have had the same full name as one of his immediate family members (I was called "Number Two" T_T;) after we married, so I thought about a new first name when we went to get our license. I was shocked when he agreed. The only condition was that he be able to pick it out, and he did so right there without looking at anything. How he came up with it, I have no idea--he really doesn't know anything beyond "thank you". Lucky for me, what he randomly thought of wasn't "radish" or "chair" or something. The end. [/storytime]
So...no, I'm afraid I don't have a drop of Asian blood in me, but my new name is precious to me.

Welcome to the forum! It's nice to meet you . I can't wait to see your kimono (seeing others in kimono is my way of making up for not having any of my own, lol). Did you take a Japanese first name? You don't have to tell me your name, lol, I'm not gonna stalk you, I'm just interested in name changes because I want to change my own, not to mention the new beginning symbolism and name changes in Japanese culture. Edit: Ohh your name is Megumi, my bad. I did read your post lol, it just didn't register in my brain lol. How did your family take it?

/hides under Black Jasmine ...my mother hung up on me when I called to tell her. Then she called back after a while to say "I might not understand it, but if your grandmother were still alive, I know she'd have just laughed." She's my biggest defender whenever anyone else suggests it was ridiculous. There's one Japanese in town that behaves rather rudely about it, but there's quite a few that have known me for years that use it without blinking.
