Well, I believe that Ichi-line is a new thing.
The only Ichi-maiko&geiko we know are Ichimame, Ichiteru, Ichifumi, Ichimomo, Ichimari and Ichtomo. Ichimame was a hanninmae in 2005 as far as I remember. That would mean that Ichi-line has only 6 years.
Before Ichi-girls appeared there were only Ume-geiko there : Umeka, Umesato and Umeshizu.
Back in the time, I believe, tere were more interesting lines such as Shime-, Ko-, Fuku-, Hide-, Hisa-, Masa-, Tama-, Teru, Yoshi- etc. in Kamishichiken.
To see how the lines migth evolve, we can look at Tsurui okiya in GK : KimiKA->SayaKA--> SAtsuki

Yes, SAtsuki because her onesan is SAyaka. So a name's line can quickly appear.

Perhaps Ichimame han did not have an oneesan. So the okaasan was able to choose her name without adding any obligatory kanji in it. And by this Ichimame han did take imouto chan so she passed her kanji Ichi? :) I do not recall knowing that Ichimame han had any oneesan, so. I wonder, might that be an answer?

Ichimame didn't have an onesan as you said. But if she had had one, her onesan could have had the part final part "mame" in her name. It's not only the beginning of the geimei which can make a link between the onesan and her imôto. Sayaka's onesan is Kimika but her imôto is Satsuki : Kimika -> Sayaka -> Satsuki ; it's easy to create a name's line.

(The onesan of Wakana was the geiko Nakako, we can guess that the middle part can be pass on too.)

You`re totally right.
The only problem is that I`ve never heard about any geiko/maiko in Kamishichiken that would have both Ichi- or Mame- part in her name. (That is even quite strange, becouse in all other hanamachi there were Mame- or -mame maiko/geiko)
I don`t know how it works with Ichiteru, but Ichimomo, Ichimari and Ichitomo don`t have an oneesan. Same is with almost all Umeno girls (except Umehisa), Nakazato girls - Hina, Hana and Ryu.

Thank you Stefan!

In Kamishichiken there is the rule that only Geiko can take a girl under her care. A Maiko in comparison to other hanamachi can take an imouto if she is a Senior Maiko.
Maybe the ladies debut straight to geiko without becoming maiko. So they are unable to take a maiko under their care? And perhaps the ones who did go thru the maiko stage like Umeshizu, does not want to take an Imouto by now, since it is a great responsability. I think.. What do you ladies think?

The exact rules for each hanamachi are these ones, I don't remember from where I copied them :
"-Kamishichiken - ONLY independent Geiko can become an oneesan to a debutant, though most of the girls in that district debuted independently for lack of stable Geiko.
-Miyagawacho - the debutant MUST have an oneesan. But they're not strict on what status the oneesan hold for she can be either a Senior Maiko or Geiko.
-Gion Kobu - ONLY independent Geiko can become an oneesan to a debutant, and on rare occasion the debutant may debut independently. In some cases the okaasan of the debutant's yakata is also her oneesan.
[ex. Mameji of Arai, Mamehiro of Ninben, Takae of Kaida]
-Pontocho & Gion Higashi - ONLY independent Geiko can become an oneesan to a debutant, and on rare occasion the debutant may debut independently."

I add that in Gion Kobu we know the case of maiko without onesan : Ayano & Fumino from Fukushima. And in Miyagawacho Komomo's onesan is her okasan because she was still an active geiko when Komomo became a maiko.
The women who directly begin as geiko are jikata for the big majority, but I have no idea if they are allowed to have an imôto.

In Kamishichiken, women who directly begin as geiko can be tachikata and can have an imôto --> Umeha (and Umehisa as an imôto)
