thank you Tsuruko , and yes it is modern but then again: a little wider and longer than the older ones, so for my purposes ideal

That was another reason that kept me off of it! Too long! Let someone else have it who it'll fit better! I'm so short, but it's a good thing in these cases. I actually just got myself a little something, one of my items I really wanted. I've kind have taken a bit of a chance on her, buuuuut, she could very well be worth it. Bad picture I know. Got a very, very old Oiran doll there. I'm not sure of her condition, but her head looks intact and decently so, and gofun oiran are incredibly valuable and I got her for a steal. I've yet to see one as old as her. She is transitional by the looks of it, her silks and kimono suggest Meiji, while her face is far more like the Taisho era dolls. I can't wait to get her in!

Tsuruko san, that's a really lovely doll. The kind of proper, antique face I like. I hope it's as good as it looks. Please let us know when she arrives, and please post more photos. It would be good to see details of the fabrics too. I think you got a treasure there. KC

Thank you, KC! I plan to post more photos when I get her. I do restore on these dolls and I hope I can really bring her back to life. I am a little worried about her uchikake, it looks pulled and faded, I may be looking for some Meiji era silks. I'm hoping it's not, but I'm always practical! :giddy:

Maybe make her some new clothes, or a new uchikake out of some extra fabric from the kimono bolts, or the sample fabrics that sometimes Ryu-Japan and Ichiroya have. Maybe also make her some new Kanzashi too, though I think there is a seller on ebay that sells doll kanzashi.

Thank you Cortana and Suara,
Ah, yes, there's a couple sellers who have doll kanzashi, and I'm quite stocked up. Need to be when I get dolls who are missing most of their hair ornaments! Given her age, I'm worried that the ones I have will not match her time period. The ones I get my hands on are modern, and they even look a little out of place on Taisho dolls at times, simply because the kanzashi are plastic, and in the Taisho period, they used bakelite and I believe in the Meiji era, real tortoise shell would've been used. I want to keep everything as period correct as possible, kanzashi, kimono, etc, etc. We'll see, we'll see, I'm waiting for shipping notice and I do hope she gets shipped out before Sunday! Squee!

I wanted to show off my first 2 kimono (a win and a buy) to you guys ^-^ This is a grey Edo komon that my boyfriend bought me as an anniversary/birthday present: Though I'm a little confused: Aren't the dots on Edo komon supposed to make a pattern? This is just a sheet of dots, so maybe it's just an exception? And here is my landscape tsukesage, a gift from my family for my birthday: I love both of them to pieces! I can't wait 'til they come in the mail, though I'll have to wait a while to wear them seeing as these are my only kitsuke items lol.

Kikuyo, Congratulations on the acquisition of two really nice kimono! The landscaped one largely speaks for itself, so beautiful it is, and the other one, well, I submit you call her the Elementary Pattern kimono. And if people make a fuzz about that, you can simply tell them all more complicated patterns are impossible without the solid base of the Elementary Pattern already existing! [If the kimono is all grey only, you could even consider adding your personal mon to it. The result would be spectacular AFAIK.] and Tsuruko-sama, Your crowing about having won that ancient Oiran doll does have a dubious smell of decided unfairness about it... if only I had known how valuable she was I'd have had her for your steal price + $ 2 or so... ...but I simply don't know that, so... ummm... congratulations! once again, & good to see she got such a fine home, where she will even be properly restored!

Ah, I never meant to 'crow', Gurita. I hadn't a clue anyone was bidding that was on here, as I thought myself the only one interested in dolls. Do you like dolls, Gurita? Intriguing, intriguing. I try never to post anything that I really had a bid war on, or anything I know for certain others would be aiming for, like hikizuri, because I know how feelings can get snubbed over that. Only $2 you think? Hmmm, it's a very good thing you didn't know what I put on her. I must admit that I have been gunning for a gofun Oiran for many, many years. I've had three oirans in my collection so far, but two of them I have sold, and I'm left with one, but soon to be two.

Oh Tsuruko, that makes me think even twice before putting something in this thread again, because I don't want to hurt anyones feelings or to drop a brick( I don't know if this is the right expression, but couldn't find a better one from german to english)....... I was allready wondering why the green Hiki did not show up here or elsewere On the other hand: if everybody will be affraid of posting their wins, isn't this thread going to die sooner or later? I'm a little confused right now

Ahhh, Suara, I don't mind if you post, and I would hope no one would get bent feelings over such things( it does happen, unfortunately :/ )! It's only a personal preference of mine, not a rule, so please, don't feel bad about posting and I hope it hasn't upset you, or anyone else for that matter. I just have more fun posting my finds anyways! Sometimes you do have to pay top dollar for something you really want, and some people really are happy and they do have every right to say, "Huzzah!" I just prefer and feel more elated finding hidden things and then paying nothing for them! Oh, it must be the little flea market buyer in me! Please, please, don't feel upset about posting, and this thread does die now and again until someone pokes it and I hope no one does feel afraid to post. <3

So... I officially have no money... But I couldn't resist buying it . At 229cm in length, I can't imagine this being anything but a man's hikizuri (how many Japanese women need a hikizuri that's over seven feet long). It was listed as a dance hikizuri (specifically under nihonbuyo rather than odori), but I found that rather confusing as it's also made of silk. I'm used to dance kimono, including high end ones, being synthetic for easy maintenance. It also looks like the excess fabric folded between the seams was let out to widen it, as some of the designs don't match up perfectly (and considering how much this thing would have cost to make, it seems like they would have taken the effort to match the seams up). This along with the fact that it was lengthened also seems odd to me, and it makes me think that maybe this kimono wasn't created specifically for some rental shop or for some dance school's costume closet (why would they buy it, just to lengthen it when it was already a decent 180-190cm beforehand). I can imagine that's where it ended up, but I'm doubting that's who commissioned it in the first place. What do you all think?

wow Fuyouhime , what a win! I Guess I'm hooked on Hiki's What wigspan does it have? And I do think you are right: if a person is 1.65 m, ca.180 cm would be needed to trail, 190cm is even better..... So, if the onnagata is over 1.75m, I can imagine he wanted to make it longer. Maybe the person who altered it, bought it allready used, and made it longer and wider afterwards? Anyway, can't wait to see your kitsuke-pics in it
