Check this site out. This woman travels the states, her art is in creating tiny kimono that are full scale reproductions of the real ones. Her site includes a listing of gallery and shows where you can see her art on display.

'Karen O'Hanlon is the designer of Chiyogami and Washi (Japanese Paper) Kimonos created in the same detailed fashion as full sized traditional robes. Each is unique because the kimonos have the appearance of fabric but they are actually paper. The high quality papers are made by master craft atisans in Japan using traditional as well as modern tools and techniques.'

'Karen was a regular visitor to Japan during her career as an international flight attendant. She took advantage of being able to study traditional Japanese arts with Yuriko Kodama. At the time Kodama-sensei was 79 years old, and instructed Karen in her specialization of creating paper dolls (washi ningo). Kodama-sensei had Karen concentrate on the kimono. Perfection was the goal, and if the slightest error was made on the kimono, Kodama-sensei would take that particular section apart. It took Karen five years to master the art of the paper kimono. She feels very privileged to have studied under a traditional Japanese artison and proud to pass on a dying art. '

As pretty as they are, why pay that much for a fake one when you can get a real one?

You have a point. All the same, people have different tastes in art, and some would sooner own / collect the paper versions than the real thing. Perhaps, it's a matter of space? Who knows, art is unique to everyone.

Those are really amazing, but I'd just as soon hang a real kimono on the wall... or better yet, on me :D For $1600 dollars, I can get several kimono and all the goodies to go along with if I shop the right places...

I think mainly with this you are paying for the art - you know, like buying a painting of a kimono instead of a real kimono. Art usually costs quite a bit at any rate, plus there's also the knowledge that these items were created with what is becoming a lost technique, kind of cool in its own right.
