Are you sure this has anything to do with friendship? I think that friendships in the karyukai would be the same as anywhere, they just have to remain professional while at work. I think this is just a case of having the same hair ornament; they are often shared between maiko/geiko and even between okiya. Maiko and geiko tend to dress for the seasons... not in a matchy-matchy friend-twin way.

At flikr was written : "This particular maezashi is very special to Makiko because it is a symbol of her close friendship with Yukako."

Oh well that's lovely I'm glad to see that they are friends instead of bitter rivals. I wonder what sign of THAT would be, lol.

The one friendship between Maiko/Geiko that I've seen is Makiko and Mamesome, who are bialogical sisters (well really, in a proffecion it's good to know someone doing the same things as you)...
I can't find the pic atm, but there's a pic of them having coffee together x][/img]

actually that's the only photo of both together that i have, so i don't think they are "best friends" just because they're sisters.
ichiyuri and mamechiho are friends i think, i saw many lovely scenes of both, where mamechiho was carrying the umbrella for both and they kept up giggeling. there are also many pictures of both joking around and posing on ozashiki. also after ichiyuris eri-kae. but of course all this is just speculation, as noone of them told me, that they are friends

well, i have the feeling that the sisters in Miyagawacho (which are now both geikos) have a deeper bond and perhaps less competitive than Sakiko and Mamesome have.
we barely see Sakiko and Mamesome together, not even to speak in pictures. so far i have only seen one of both together...

You mean Kimika and Kimiharu? They aren't in the kiku-group.
I would imagine they have a much different dynamic than Sakiko and Mamesome just because Kimika and Kimiharu are in the same okiya and trained together. It would have most likely been a more bonding experience that would have strengthened their relationship as sisters (giving each other support as shikomi, relying on each other, etc). Sakiko and Mamesome in response aren't in the same house and didn't go through their shikomi period together, so their time would be limited and fact that their work doesn't contribute to the same place would also work against a deepening bond ... but that's all speculation...
