I decided to start a little something that would get a few more topics going on in here, and getting some brain juices flowing. I'm going to try to make sure that a new topic gets posted every week, that doesn't mean anyone can post any other topics they are curious for an advanced discussion, this is just my way of making a few more topics to get participation up.
What is your opinion and feelings on rivalry on Geisha? Many books touch upon these subjects, such a Mineko Iwasaki's novel. Do you feel that today there is less or more rivalry between competing Geisha as well as districts? Liza Dalby commented upon how she went to the Ichiriki and that the Gion Kobu Geisha had rather insulted the Pontocho Geisha on how they had danced Gion Kouta.
Do you think there might be even rivalry between Oneesan?

Oh yes of course there is going to be rivalry! It's just natural and human nature, I think. I've always wondered if Mamechiho and Kotoha had that sort of thing going on... Seeing all of those photo's of Kotoha glaring at her. Seeing as Mineko had that sort of thing going on with her big sister I'm sure there are other girls unhappy with the One-san. I wonder though if there have been any throw downs between the girls.

Yeah, that's one of the things I've wondered about, Mamechiho vs Kotoha. It seems like Gion Kobu is most notorious for the competition.
I also wonder if the reason why Mamesaho quit was because she just couldn't get from out of Mamechiho's shadow. I think really what set her off may have been Mamehana, as I am fairly certain that Mamehana was going to be Mamesaho's little sister, and Mamesaho, while sweet and pretty, was no where near as cute as Mamechiho, nor stunningly beautiful like Mamehana. That's got to be a hard place to be inbetween, and Mamesaho quit just several days after Mamehana's Misedashi. I also don't think Mamechiho took all that great care of Mamesaho, most of the photos I have of Mamesaho are her by herself, without her older sister, and even in the ones where Mamesaho is with Mamechiho, there just seems to be so much cold shoulder. Of course, there's really not hard evidence here, but it is certainly something that makes me curious.

I really liked Mamasaho, I was shocked when I heard that she quit. She was actually my favorite up until then. I never really thought about Mamechiho and Mamehana perhaps being a little cause to it.

theres always going to be rivalry in the hanamachi's. that would be funny kind of the see kotoha and mamechiho throw down on each other though. Competition is what sets the drive to be be number 1. Like even when i was little and was in the younger ballet my mom taught me to practice practice and yes you do have to step on people. and then it's not just of course only in the hanamachi's but between the Hanamachi's! like i remeber, from liza dalby, she told her onesan that she was going to debut herself in Miyagawacho but her onesan told her she'd be better off debuting in Pontocho, since Miyagawacho had a reputation and not a good one. so it's always going to be " I can do anything you can do better, I can do anything better than you."
on the mamechiho, mamehana thing, i always wondered that since mamechiho is one of the idealic maiko because she is just so kawaii, and then having your own immoto san being stunning and you being left in the middle you would probably feel as if you were trapped.

I think there will always be rivalry in the hanimachi but i dont thinks its as bad as the olden days, do you? And ye i saw alot of photo with kotoha staring at mamechiho.....like giving her the evils!!LOL
oh...and ye i think part of it was because of mamechiho and mamehana.........a felt sorry for mamesaho...all she wanted to do was be a geisha! xx

I really liked Mamesaho because she seemed quite different and not so stereotypically Geisha, she was neither drop dead gorgeous or cute as a button.
I agree, I don't think rivalry is as bad as it used to be, perhaps. There's a lot less Geisha, so a lot less competition, but at the same time, there's no where near as many clients or tea houses for the Geisha. While I'm so happy to see such a boom in new recruits, I worry over if there is enough customers to go around. :/

you might be on someting there tsuruko-sama. i would call her an average maiko with a little something that made her stand out. to me she looked like a simple girl, laughing a lot. the truth is, she was more around with Mameyuri than with Mamechiho. She might have seen in Mamehana a to big opponent. Mamehana and Mamechiho look like the dream pair to me. beautiful and full of talent. this brings me to mamezome, she isn't a big beauty either, but it seems like mamehana is taking great care of her. but mamechiho isn't much seen around with her. she is seen much alone... hmm....
she might be one of the type of person that can act very nice around unknown people, but be horrible/jealous/mean when being with people she knows????
where there are women, there will be rivalery. it's in our nature.
and you can see the clans during events like hassaku or new years. who goes with whome, who talks with whome and so on.
it's a good thing that there is some competition, some girls will work hard on their dancing or singing and at the end, it can only be beneficial for their careers.

It just like highschool.

yes and than there are the ones who go alone or with their big sisters. two steps behind them, not participating in the chatting
must be hard at some times to always have to walk behind the others. hearing them chatting and laughing. you might feel worthless no?
i like the highschool comparisson, but not in every country it is that divised. i know that where i live, it is not as extreme as that.

when your attending an highly populated school of over 3,000 students. its like that. yeah...... and that would really suck to have to walk behind the people like your onean whos just chatting away and you can't get a word in.

how do we track who goes with who on the special events like Hassaku and shigiyoshiki? the answer to that is simple youtube, and photos. you can see who goes with who. like one popular group is the infamous Ha line. Mayuha,Suzuha,Kotoha,Yasuha, and Tsuruha. They always walk and talk together.
